F3. Metadata clearly and explicitly include the identifier of the data it describes

When research metadata and data are stored separately, it is essential to ensure they are linked by unique PIDs to maintain the connection between them. This makes it easier to identify, retrieve and manage data.

The role of data producers

Clearly structure the data in relation to data and metadata. Where connections between datasets are likely to be needed, prepare for later referencing by assigning local identifiers.

The role of data platform operators

Support the assignment of PIDs for metadata and data, ideally through an automated process. Clearly indicate which datasets are related so that they can be easily found and reused together.
